Music and Silence

There is a part of creating that is very hard to show from the outside. It’s not the image taking shape, and not even the ideas written down in a notebook, but that quiet, focused state when I am simply inside something. When the outside world fades a little and all my attention gathers around a single thing. When I’m photographing, this silence is almost essential for me. I don’t like anything pulling my focus away. It feels as if sounds interfere with what I’m doing.

Editing belongs to a completely different world. There I allow something to sit beside the work and for me, that is almost always music. Talking about music is just as difficult as talking about creating. I’ve been following Hania Rani for a long time and I love her music, but lately I’ve been listening almost obsessively to the pieces she wrote for the film Sentimental value whenever I edit. I’ve thought a lot about why this particular music fits editing so well. Perhaps because, just as my images, these melodies don’t tell concrete stories but are more like moods, simply open a door you can step through, if you wish.

I don’t think this music is for everyone, and yet I still recommend it to everyone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnymieFim9Y
